PLE 14.
I have completed the steps 1-3 on the PLE for this week.
The university course evaluation is done, checking my grades in moodle
are all up to date, and i took the survey.

Internet Safety Reflection

Internet Safety Reflection

I have read on may articles, but my article of choice is
"Let our voices be heard," by Elder M. Russell Ballard.
Briefly. it was about how bad choices in media result
in bad choices in our daily lives. If we make bad choices on
the internet we are also putting our families at risk. People
really do need to be careful what they view in media and choose
wisely what we watch and listen to.
I watched many videos from the PBS.org. I viewed many on
how adolescents use the internet to change their identity. They can
be who ever they want to be, and they have all their relationships with
people online! They dont meet them, they just talk online and send
pictures of what they want the other person to perceive them as.
I just can't believe how many kids use the computer for those reasons!
As i watched these videos online i feel like the kids act as if they know
of everything that can happen online, and what they should not be doing,
but i believe that knowledge is minimal. They really needed to be taught
how the internet can be dangerous and to always be very careful!
My most important take away's from reading and watching the online videos
is that you really can not trust anything online. You always have to be very
careful when it comes to students and kids at home online. You
have to be aware of what they are doing online at all times and
monitor them. As soon as you do not do this, the kids start to do
their private things online that you would never know of, which may
be unsafe and bad. Just like the girl that distant herself from her family
and was posting inappropriate pictures of herself online for everyone to see.
I have learned that to be aware and make the media and internet a
safe place for kids put limits on the computer, add blocks on the
media, set a good example, talk to them, limit the time you can use
the computer, put it in a common room, and watch your kids!
For the"doing" part of the assignment, i have talked to two different
people. When i asked them both on what they knew on the topic,
they both new that the internet could put their children at
risks, and that it is unsafe for them. They knew that kids sometimes
do go on chat room pages and that they were unsafe for all children.
I found that they knew a lot about internet and media safety but they
didn't know how bad it could be for some kids. For example,
when i told them about how many kids use the internet to talk with
people and use that for relationships by sending pictures of
themselves and making a self image that they are not, they were
shocked. Or about the story when the girl made her own website
displaying inappropriate pictures of herself and the parents
did not even know, they were disgusted. I dont think all parents
really do know all the risks of media and how unsafe it could be.
Like when a girl had been killed by her online relationship partner,
or older people trying to get young kids. After i had explained
all of this to them i told them some things that could help them in
making sure their own kids will be safe online too! I think by having
this talk with them, they will really take into consideration on how
dangerous the internet can be and they will keep a closer
eye on their children. One of the parents mentioned that they do leave
their computer in a common room, but the other has their computer in
a room in the house. I think by talking and explaining to them,
they will try and make the changes in their house to make it a
safer place for their children! Overall, i think this assignment
was a real eye opener, and hopefully
more people learn about it and we can teach those
who are lacking
this information. This way them and their children can be safer!

Throughout my practicum experience in the grade three classroom
at the riverview elementary school, i was able to see the different
technologies that the classrooms had and what the school
had provided them to share between classes or in labs. The
school is new and is just starting out, and it had many computers!
They had two pretty big labs, and i room with a big projector and
screen that can be used for all. I noticed that in the classroom i
was in, there was not much technology. They only had the one
computer in there, and the students did not use this one.
Teacher use only. For my whole time i was there in the
classroom, i found that my teacher did not use very much technology.
They only provided her class with a projector that was shared,
but my teacher had never used it and didnt know how it worked.
Therefore that was never used. I did notice that the overhead
was used a few times, and the stereo in the back of the
classroom was used everyday for singing. They were
working on a christmas concert, so that is why she had
used that. I noticed the tv and dvd player was only used
during in door recesses. Other than that my teacher did not
use any technology. I thought even without technology,
she had fun exciting lessons. She taught a lot by using the
white board and talking. She had many other things that
were brought into the lesson to make it more fun for her
students. To me, i dont believe that any technology was needed
or could have been used in her lessons, the school did not
have a lot of technology that could have been implimented.
She did it well enough without, and truthfully, i dont know
where she could fit it in. My teacher did teach the students
how to type on the computers for the first three weeks of school,
they did typing games and programs. I didn't see her utilize
this skill with the students after they had finished up learning.
I think she definitely could have got them to type more of there writing
assignments, or even make a revised, good copy on the computers.
This is what i had done for my technology lesson in the elementary
classroom. I believe that if the school/ classroom had
smart boards, my teacher could have easily implemented
that into her lessons she was teaching. This is one thing i do
believe she could have done. While i was there, they did not have
social studies and science, so the science technology could not have
been used either. Overall, my teacher did not use much technology,
and i believe that it may have been possible when she teaches all
the subjects. From my time there, i think that the computers could
have been used more.

Inside Kapunahala
This is great because it provides the students with a chance to participate in public speaking skills and learn how to use technology. Its great because it involves students from a variety of grade levels the chance to participate. Its exciting to the students because they get to speak on camera and be on t.v. for the very first time in their lives! they learn a lot about media, and each grade has something to do in this area and learn about. This is also a great way to get the students involved in the lesson because it is so much fun, and it makes it exciting for the students. Using a variety of technology really pulls the students into the lesson, and gets them to want to learn! In this media lesson, the students will still learn about all the curriculum material. Just in a more fun way.
Bookends of war
I really enjoyed watching this video. The students look really into to and excited to be working with technology! getting them to help make individual parts of the class website is a great idea to make the project feel like their own, and getting them to be responsible. Having the students work in groups for this technology assignment is also really good, in the fact that they have to work together and socialize. it was clever for the teacher to teach one student in each group how to do everything, and in turn, that student has to teach the rest of their groups. The students are eager to come to class each and everyday, and they are more willing to help others out. All the students have to collaborate together to reach the same goal, this really makes it a great learning experience. This is a great way to get all the students involved because it is something different, its fun and exciting. It is great because it is not like the usual standard class where the students have to take on exam or a test. They get graded on their effort, their progress and that they are working efficiently. Using the computers as a large part of the class, they are able to gain many skills, which may help them later on in life when they are looking for a job. They know how to work computers and different technology items.

I had really enjoyed watching these videos that were posted.
I like how they showed how technology was implemented in the
classrooms and how they always had an idea on how to
implement them into a lesson plan. The technology brought all
the students into the lesson and made it more fun for them as
it is different than the usual learning environment done in most
schools. In one of the videos, i found that using technology really
brought the class together, it made them help each other and
learn from each other. In another video i really liked how the
students got to work with children from different grades! This
really gives the students a chance to get to know others in their
school and learn from one another. The older grades could also
attain that feeling of leadership being they could work and
possibly help others out. These videos were great because
it showed that technology never gets old and that it does not
matter what age group you have, there are always technology
lessons you could implement into your classrooms.
so teachers should always dig deeper and make there lessons with
technology, which in turn may bring more students into their lesson
because it relates to them some how, it also adds variety into your
lessons, and the students can work together and learn while having fun!

My initial observations when i walked into the classroom, is that it had decent technology that most classrooms may have or start out with. It was not above and beyond with technology that it could have been, but i mean its a new school and they are just starting out. So possibly in a couple years they might get more technology in each room.
In my classroom, there is one PC computer with internet access, there are all the Microsoft office programs and one sight for the students called "imagine." There is also on overhead projector, a reading station that has headphones and a player so they can listen along as they read, there is an old T.V and VCR it may even play DVDs im not too sure what she has in that area. There is also a multi-verse projector that is shared between classrooms and a digital camera that is also shared.
The thing i was impressed with was their computer labs! They had two big computer labs in the school all with PC computers and there was about 30-35 in each lab. One even had a lab technician to work with the students on the computers.

I have completed parts 1 & 2 that were above this assignment on the website homework page. I also took the survey and filled out the information on classroom technology inventory and submitted it!

I had watched and commented on Heather, heidi, and Karyn's blog wall about their science challenge video they had done.

I actually enjoyed doing this technology assginment for once because i thought it was quite easy and not to complicated. I think this would actually be great to impliment into your classroom because it would not take up to much time on the planning part so it could be totally worth your time to do and show in class. I also believe that if you had the older grades in elementary education or even in junior high, i think that it would be possible to teach them and they could make their own video on a science project they are trying to implement. This would be a great assignment to show they know how and what they have learned in doing their experiment. The only downside to this technology assignment is that you may not have all the materials to do the science experiment to show the class. For example, you may not have the themometer rods, or the star program, you may not have the microscope item that hooks up to your computer, etc..
Overall, i believe if you have the materials to do this project, then do it because it can help enhance the students learning and add more variety into your lessons!

1. In our technology enhanced science activity, we will be looking at the properties of water. We will be looking at water, as a solid, liquid and gas. Ihis actvity, the teacher will be talking about it, and they will be showing and demonstrating the change in each stage. There will be a bowl of water and ice. This shows two states. The ice will melt and the students will be observing it as it changes into water. The teacher will take the water bowl and microwave it or they could put it in a crock pot and they will see how water canges into steam. Along with showing the studdents the states of water and how they change, they will use a themometer to test the temperature that each of these states. This will show the students how cold or hot it has to be to make water, steam or ice. During this demonstration, the students will be watching and observing, they could fill out a work sheet or write a relfelction, whichever you perfer as a teacher. The students should also get a chance to use the themometers.
2.i. The content we will be focusing on, is the states of water and their temperatures. (solid, liquid, gas .. melting/ boiling points. This will show how we get to each states.
ii. We want to implement observing, classifying, predicting, aquiring, and processing data.
This is a great fit with the demonstartion we are doing, so they can understand the knowledge we are trying to see, and it is a visual activity so you can actually understand and see the processes happening in each state to another.
iii. We will be using themometers. It will be a good fit, so the students can learn how to use one and read one. They will better understand at what temperatures it takes for boiling/ melting points to takes place. And what temperature it has to be to be in different forms
iv. It shows the temperature that each state of water occurs at. I believe if you didnt use technology (themometers) to demonstarte, it could be harder to understand. This way it is visual and they can actually see for themselves they all occur at different temperatures. It just adds to the learning process!

I had watched and explored kindy's, Heathers, and Heidi's virtual tours and posted a comment about it on their walls.
I believe there are many upsides and downsides to implementing this virtual tour into your classroom as a teacher. I think that it is a great way to teach students about different places and learn facts on them by exploring the tour on their own. It is a fun exciting activity they can do, which will be engaging to them because it is totally different from a regular instructional day. It is a change in the media, and it gives variety to your lesson. This virtual tour can be a great way to get kids motivated and tied into the lesson if teachers were to present this at the very beginning of the unit or lesson that they were going to be learning. If i was a student that had to explore and do the application activities on a topic, i would love it because i would find it neat, and exciting that i got to explore this cool world on my own. Also using this at the beginning of a new unit can give ELL learners as well as the regular english speaking students a chance to get a little bit of background knowledge on the topic at hand that will be taught. It will give them a better understanding in the fact that there will be pictures and videos explaining rather than a teacher talking. They may also be able to make conections to their own lives. I believe a downfall to this virtual tour would be that there may not be enough computers to go round, and if you do get into a computer lab, it will take longer than the time given because of all the application assignments throughout the virtual tour. I think this is a major downfall to using this. Lastly, teachers should really get to know their students and how they behave and learn before doing this virtual tour because it may not fit the class they are teaching.

My visual tour is about physical activity for; health, enjoyment, challenge, self expression, and/or social interaction. My tour is to give a descrption of a couple different sports that different countries are great it. It is to help teach kids that there are many different fun physical activities that can be enjoyed alone or with others, like a team sport. And maybe it will get them excited and encouraged to get out and try different physical activities for fun, and maybe even competitive!

Physical Education 4th grade

Standard 1: students will value physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self expression, and/or social interaction

Objective 1: indicate how physical activity provides an opportunity for enjoyment and self-expression.

b: choose activities that can be enjoyed alone and activities that include others.

I plan to do my virtual tour on this subject because i love sports, i have been involved in them my whole life, and i believe that all children should have a chance to learn about different sports. This way they can become more involved in physical activity, even if it is just for fun and not competitive. They should try them, and enjoy playing different kinds of sports. The only way some children that dont exercise will become encouraged is by possibly watching videos and looking at pictures, and just learning about the different sports that each country is great at! They may learn about this and think "hey i want to try this!" Watching these media items and looking at pictures will also help explain what is going on in the sport and it will be very neat to watch! It also gives them background knowledge about sports that they may never have the chance to learn about. Getting physically active is crucial to good health, and that is why i picked this topic for my virtual tour!

i believe one of the hardest things about implimenting a made video into elementary classrooms, is making it legal to show. Just making sure that all the things you put in this video have been cited correctly, or you have not used too much of a song, poem, pictures, etc... Also i think it could be time consuming to the planning for a class, but a good question would be is, is it good enough to show in the lesson and the time was well spent on it? or is it just taking up teaching time and planning time.

I learned last week that TK is very important to teachers. To start we need to get content knowledge and Pedagogy knowledge and together those make Particular content knowledge. From here we can learn about TK: technology knowledge. It is important for teachers to learn about this and gain more information about different technolgy. This will in turn enrich teachers lesson plans and make them more interesting and fun. They will help them teach lessons as well.
In this story board, i have chosen to do it on "living a healthy lifestyle."In this story board we introduce how it is important to live a healthy life, and we give three different areas of physical activity to live help people on their way to being active! We start off with talking about stretching. We show on each page a different stretch and how to do it, also what it stretches. Some are: pike, splits, bridge, ankles, and wrists. We then talk about strength and give different strength exercises and how to do them. Lastly we show endurance activities and different sports that could be very fun to play! I believe this digital story will help teach this lesson to students because i can put whatever i choose into it and make it so it encourages students to be more active. Also the story board makes it more fun for students in learning, it is something new. Plus i did it on the athletes at at BYU, so maybe they saw a role model or someone they look up to. This can also encourage them to be more physically active! This representation of the content will help the students learn the information better because there is a picture demonstrating what the words are saying. So even if they are non-english language learners, they will still be able to understand! This will just enforce what the movie is saying and help all students!

Ibelieve this was the most challenging assignment i have ever done. I am not very good with computers, but by the time i got to the last web page, where we got to pick anything we wanted it was a lot easier! I believe learning how to add links and brining in videos and pictures were so useful. i never really knew how to do that. They never turned out, probably because i never pressed the source button and did it properly. Even though this was hard, i believe all of it was useful because it will all come handy when i start teaching and have to make my own website and planning for everyone to see.

technology experience

Starting in elementary school we had computer class, where we learned how to type, and access safe websites. We had also started how to do power point. Throughout my school years we learned how to research, how to use word to write our papers, etc.. I had bought my first laptop in grade eleven, where i learned how to use many different programs and sites. While i am at BYU i have made my first blog and google account, which w had done in this class. Other than the computer, i have and ipod, cell phone, and many other technology items.
